Editing Process

Hello today in my blog I will be talking about how I felt when editing my final project!

We used Premeire Pro to do our editing and my group and I took a screen recording as we edited part of our film so in this blog I will be inserting that video. It was a very long video so I had to speed it up a lot.

Struggles:
Since we had already done a practice using Premiere Pro a lot of the struggle was just us trying to remember how to use some tools.

Something we struggled at was moving the clips around, in the picture we were trying to move a clip to the front by dragging it but this made the clips keep overlapping. We were struggling at this until we figured out how to manually add the clip in to where we need it.

Something we used a lot was the split and cut tools. A lot of the clips we used were too long or had a lot of extra footage that wasn't needed so we ended up splitting the clips and cutting out the parts we didn't need with the tools. I circled the tools and the cut button is cut off.

Another struggle we had was that we kept accidentally duplicating some clips when editing them and it just wasted some time. We had to delete the duplicated clips but it wasn't anything we couldn't fix.

Behind the scenes of filming

Hi there! Here are some photos of the behind the scenes of us filming. You can see some of the different location that we were filming at and the different angles used in our film.

This photo was from the final scene and I had some trouble keeping the camera steady and I was tracking her

This laptop was one of the props we used.

You can see this is where the poison failed the first time.

All these photos above are from the poisoning scene. This scene had quite a few cuts and angles, we also had to refilm multiple shots when trying get them right.

This is a photo of my group reviewing the footage of what we just recorded deciding if we wanted to do it again or not.

In these photos you can see the costume and the wig very well. You can also see we switched locations because we liked one more than the other. We ended up going with the top out of the 3 because the lighting was a little darker there and it fit more with conventions of our genre.

Title of our film opening

For our films name my group had originally agreed on the name "Rouge" but we ended up wanting to change the name after we got to our location and started filming.

We were inspired by the place we filmed at and decided to name our film after it. Its new name is "The Pub". It was inspired by a specific scene that we filmed.

I was recording a few shots around the restaurant trying to get a few good establishing shots and I started to zoom in on the words "the pub" and we really liked how it sounded. The font was also very nice and reminded us of the James Bond movies so we thought it would be a good name.

In reflection, if we had chosen another location we wouldn't have come up with this name for our film. I think this name matches our film much more than the original and is a bit more creative and fun.

Struggles In production

In production we faced quite a few struggles including scheduling, camera issues, and things with props and costume so I am going to be explaining them and how they were resolved.

Scheduling:

Our main problem faced was scheduling, we had originally planned to film a few days before break but something happened to one of our actresses so we had to reschedule. We then planned to film in the middle of the break which lead to the casting changes since someone was on vacation. A few days into break someone from my group got the new flu strand so we had to delay our filming again and ended up filming a few days later.

Camera:

Another problem faced was struggles with the camera. The camera was not fully charged when we started filming so it kept dying during our filming process. This made us have to stop and charge the cameras battery. This did delay our filming process and made it take a bit longer but it was something very easy to overcome.

Another thing that I struggled a little with was getting the camera to focus and keeping it stable. There were a couple scenes that I struggled in getting the camera to focus, I had to zoom the camera in and out a couple times before it was able refocus. There were a couple times we were trying to do some static shots and my hands would move a bit and we would have to reshoot because it made the film look messy and it was no longer a static shot if there was movement.

Costume/Props:

We also had some very small issues with the wig used in the filming process and with some of our props. Alejandra (the female protagonist wearing the wig) has very long hair so we had to tie it up in a bun to be able to put the wig on. Since the wig had short hair we struggled a little in covering the bun and we had to refilm a few shots to make sure her original hair wasnt showing.

We faced a problem with our poison prop as well, we had to get a glass of water from the place we were filming at so we had one try to get the poison right since it was red and would color the water. The first time we did it the liquid wouldn't come out fast enough and made the clip look awkward so we had to get a new glass and try it again.

Here is a picture of the prop not working the first time.

In reflection we faced quite a few problems but at the end of the day we were able to overcome them all and got the process done.

Color Theory and Font

In this blog post I am going to be talking about the font that I picked for my film opening and color theory that I researched

Font:

The font that we decided on is the one below

 Wagnesday Regular

It matches the thriller vibe and the location we are filming at as well. Font is important because it conveys a message or a feeling. Font is also supposed to catch people's attention and I think this font does that well. Thrillers are often mysterious and this font reminds me of a puzzle the way the letters fit together so I think it conveys the feeling of a thriller.

Color Theory:

The two colors im focusing on researching on were red and black. Color schemes are used to add to the mood and emphasize things that are important. I researched what colors I could use to emphasize what I need for my film.

Black often symbolizes secrets and the unknown in spy thrillers so in the opening we are planning on making the female protagonist Valeria dress in all black to add to the mystery of her character and symbolize her guarded/secret identity. Black is also used for shadows so dressing her in black is symbolizing blending her into the background and trying to make her go unnoticed.

Red is often times associated with negative emotions and connotations like danger, anger, blood. In my film I want the female protagonist wearing red lipstick so symbolize she is dangerous since that will be the only pop of color in the outfit it acts as a sort of warning sign. I also want the poison being used on the target to be red to symbolize the effect it is supposed to have on the target.

In reflection the font we have chosen reflects the genre as well. The colors being focused on in the film opening all have a purpose that is to help the film convey its message of not underestimating the women and that she is dangerous.

Changing Casting

For our film opening we have planned to film in spring break but we are having some scheduling issues so we have to change up the cast. Here is an updated list:

Female Protagonist- Valeria

Alejandra Arratia

Target- Bella

Jazmine Pozo

Mysterious Caller- Unknown name

Alex Barbosa

Camera Women/Director

Connie Di Mare

In reflection, we had to make the decision to either delay our filming or change the casting and we decided to change the casting to leave us with more time.

Script Writing

Hello! This blog is going to be about how we wrote the script. This film opening focused more of cinematography rather than dialogue. There is only a little bit on dialogue at the end of the of the film opening. Instead of only writing a short script, I went into more detail about what will be happening in each shot along with the little bit of dialogue at the end  since it is more focused on camerawork.

Pictures of how we were writing it:

In reflection having this was extremely helpful. This let us have a full plan and a fully planned structure. There wasn't much dialogue but just having it written and planned is much better then having to improvise it when we are already filming.

Costume Design / Mise-en-scene

Hello for this blog I will be talking about the costume design I am planning for each character to have. Mise-en-scene is very important in films for setting the mood and adds to the storytelling.

Female Lead:

The female lead in my film opening is going to be a spy on a mission. My film is also going for a sort of femme fatale type character so I have to take that into account when thinking about costume, props, and makeup. The femme fatale character often uses a dark color scheme, bold makeup, and the use of many props.

For the makeup I was thinking something like that. I was the eye to be a bold dark look and I want the cheekbones to be accentuated. The only thing I would change is I want the spy to be wearing red lipstick because that color is often associated with danger and the spy is someone who is dangerous, the lipstick can kind of be a warning.

For outfit I was thinking something in between these two. I want her to have a sophisticated look but not look too fancy. She is a spy so she is meant to blend in and not bring too much attention to herself, and the color black is a metaphor to her working in the shadows and blending in. An important prop I want her to have is a watch.
For hair I imagine the spy having a short wig on to hide her identity and add to the mystery.

The victim:
For the victims costume I want it to be something casual but not too casual. I want her to look like any other person making you wonder why she is a target.
For the outfits I was thinking something like this. This is the causal type of vibe Im thinking of, I don't want her in sweat pants for anything. I want her somewhat dressed up, she needs to look put together. A prop I plan of using for the victim is a laptop.

I was thinking of something like this for the makeup as well.

Caller:

For the caller, her identity isn't going to be revalved, you will just hear her voice and maybe see her lips as she talks. All I want revealed is the red lipstick again symbolizing the danger and connecting our female lead to the caller as well.

Storyboard

Hello! In this blog I will be showing the storyboard I created with my group.

In reflection I think it was very important that we made a storyboard so we could visualize and actually organize our ideas. I am not very good at drawing and I understand things more if I write them out so i accommodated my storyboard to that as well. Another good part about the process was that we were able to pre plan shots we want to use as well. We also realized some of our ideas didn't make sense in the sequence we were working with so we made some changes, if we hadn't made the storyboard we wouldn't have realized the problem and we would have gone into filming unprepared.

Character Casting

In this blog post I will be introducing everyone who is a part of the film opening

The Female Protagonist (Leading Actress) Valeria:

Gianni Rodriguez

The Target (Minor Role) Bella:

Alejandra Arratia

Caller from Agency (Minor role) Unknown name:

Jazmine Pozo

Camera women/Director:

Connie Di Mare

Reflection:

Before creating our characters and planning their personalities, outfits, and names, I wanted to cast all the people first because I want the person playing the character to fit the name/personality I'm giving them. Writing the script is also a lot easier once I know who is playing each character because I can visualize whos saying it or just get them the read the script and see if it sounds right coming out of their mouths/if it flows properly

Location Planning

For this blog post I am going to be planning where to do my film opening. I have 3 options and I am going to be comparing them and seeing which will fit the vibe im going for the most. I chose to do it at a mall because there are often lots of people there which can make my film look and sound more realistic and there are lots of possible places to film in. For my film a portion of it is going to be in a restaurant so I need to keep that in mind as well.

Pembroke Lakes Mall:

The first option is pembroke lakes mall. This place is pretty busy so it would work with the realism of my film opening. The problem with this location is that it is completely indoors and does not have proper restaurants. For my film opening I want part of it outside and I some scenes have to be in a sit down restaurant but pembroke lakes only has a food court.

Sawgrass Mills Mall:

Another option is Sawgrass Mills. This mall is both indoor and outdoor and is the biggest out of the 3. The problem with this mall is that it might be too busy, there are usually a very large amount of people and sometimes it is even difficult to walk around because of how busy it is. I like that there are many restaurants to choose. Overall I think this option is too busy and the location is a bit far from me so it would be difficult to go there and film

Pembroke Gardens Mall:

The last option is Pembroke Gardens, this mall is basically all outdoors and alternates from stores to restaurants. It is not too busy to the point that you can't walk around and there are some nice places to film in.

In reflection i am choosing to film at pembroke gardens because i feel that it is the perfect amount of busy, has good areas to film in, and has plenty of restaurants to choose from that are a good mix of fancy and casual which is perfect for my film opening.

Project Proposal

Hello, my name is Connie and I will be working on a film opening with two other people (their names are Jazmine and Alejandra). I have been doing a lot research and I have decided to go with a spy thriller as my film opening genre/subgenre.

Target Audience

Our target audience is Gen Z, Gen , and Millennials because the thriller genre has a very wide range of viewers. It is also for both males and females because overall both genders are interested in the genre as well.

Representation

Since I have decided to use a female lead instead of male lead, which is the more common stereotype, it will represent women and go against the norm.

Software/Hardware

  • Software: I am going to be using the digital program Adobe Premiere Pro to edit my film opening and put it all together.
  • Hardware: I am going to be using a Canon camera to film all the clips, an SD card to be able to store the clips, a desktop from school in which i'm going to transfer all the clips and do my editing on.

Camera Practice

In this blog post I'm going to be talking about my experience in trying out a camera. I am in my schools yearbook program so I am experienced in using cameras to take pictures but I have never tried to take any videos.

I first picked a camera, I wanted to use one that had a better zoom in lens for things like close up shots. I made sure that I had the SD card for the camera which is where the pictures and videos get recorded and then I got started

I then turned on the camera and I had to ask my teacher about what setting I need to use to be able to take videos instead of pictures. That's when I found out instead on just switching the camera to on I would have to push it up to the video setting.

Another thing I didn't know how to do was start and end a video. After playing around with the camera a little I found out that to start/end the video I needed to press the button that has the red dot next to it

After figuring all of that I started practicing different types of shots with my group.

Establishing shots:

Tracking shot:

High angle shot:

Low angle shot:

Two shot/Mid shot:

Over the shoulder shot:

Close up shot:

Reflection:

In reflection I think I need to work on stabilizing the camera while im taking videos because for my film I want to use static movement but it doesn't seem like it since my hands are a little shaky. I also want to work on focusing the camera more because I struggled with the camera going in and out of focus.
